Living Architecture
What I want for my money is something that gives me more than I paid for it in time, money and effort. This means that the buildings, spaces, and cities that get built should provide the people that live with and within them something more than their cost. Architecture should speak the language of living and the principles of the people in their midst. This becomes more difficult if the people have no sense of who they are and what they believe in. If the community is just a group of strangers that happen to occupy the same space on the planet then what architecture can inspire them to live together and have a sense of community? I don’t want to live with architecture that is a punchline. Something that has no purpose or enduring design principles that can be carried forward into other structures. What is the point of having one home or building that is alone in its architecture? Is it only for the owner of the building to enjoy singly?
I want to live in a city of great architecture that captures enduring design principles to define the feel and essence of the city and its people. I don’t want to have to please the latest political structure so they can put their name on something they don’t understand or could not have created. I want architecture that I can live in. I want architecture that demands from me better living standards and practices. I want to be inspired to do better. Is there any architecture that does this? What are architects and designers doing to find and express this form of living.
I’m not talking about technology. I’m talking about living and experience. I see materials, shape, form, texture, lighting, sightlines, symbology, spatial relationships, function, usable space, reflection, color, fluidity, and balance of environment as providing liveable architecture. Beauty is individual, inspiration in universal. I want to be inspired!
